SFCC vs Shopify Plus in 2026: A Decision Guide

SFCC vs Shopify Plus in 2026: A Decision Guide

Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC, formerly Demandware) and Shopify Plus are both serious enterprise platforms in 2026. The old shorthand of “Shopify for small brands, SFCC for big ones” no longer holds. Shopify Plus runs large global brands, and SFCC has become easier to run headless. The right choice depends on how your business works, not on how big it is.

We build and support stores on both platforms, and we help brands move between them. This guide sets out the criteria we use with clients and how much weight each one usually deserves. It also shows where each platform tends to win.

The short answer:

  • Choose Shopify Plus if you want lower total cost, fast time to market and a team that can run the store without heavy development. It also fits if your requirements mostly match how Shopify already works, including standard B2B.
  • Choose SFCC if you run many brands, sites or locales from one back office, need deep control over pricing, promotions and search, or already rely heavily on other Salesforce clouds.
  • If you’re unsure, score both platforms against the weighted criteria below before anyone writes a proposal.

How to Use This Guide

Score each platform from 1 (poor fit) to 5 (strong fit) on every criterion, against your own requirements. Multiply each score by the criterion’s weight and add up the results. The default weights below reflect what usually drives cost and risk in the projects we see. Move them to match your business, but write down why before you look at the totals.

Agentic-commerce readiness10%You want native AI-channel syndication with little build effortYou want full control of agent-facing endpoints and data on your own terms

Two notes before the details:

  1. Agentic readiness is a criterion, not the decision. AI shopping agents are a real and growing channel, but in 2026 they rarely justify a replatform on their own. That’s why the default weight is 10%. Raise it if agent-led discovery already drives measurable revenue in your category.
  2. Product data is not on the list because it isn’t a platform feature. It still decides how well either platform performs, and it’s the largest hidden cost of any migration. We cover it separately below.

1. Total Cost of Ownership

Shopify Plus publishes its pricing. The plan starts at around $2,300 per month on a three-year term, plus a variable platform fee once monthly sales pass a set threshold. Using a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments adds further fees. Hosting, security patching and platform upgrades are included, and many features are bought as apps with monthly fees.

SFCC is usually licensed as a share of gross merchandise value (GMV), with an annual minimum and contract terms negotiated with Salesforce. Hosting, scaling and upgrades are included in that licence. Implementation and ongoing development cost more, because most changes need SFCC-skilled developers.

What to model:

  • Licence over five years at your growth forecast, not this year’s revenue. GMV-based licensing grows with you, and so do variable fees.
  • Build cost of the first release, including integrations and data migration.
  • Run cost: support retainer, release testing, monitoring and the internal team needed to operate the platform.
  • App and third-party subscriptions on Shopify. These often add up to more than expected.

In our experience, Shopify Plus almost always comes out cheaper for brands whose requirements fit the platform. When Decor Steals moved from Salesforce to Shopify, the project took less than six months and cost about $300,000 less than their earlier Salesforce launch. SFCC’s cost is easier to justify when one licence replaces several stores, or when complex requirements would otherwise mean an expensive custom stack on top of Shopify.

2. Customisation and Multi-Site

Shopify Plus customises through themes, apps and Shopify Functions. Functions are small pieces of custom logic that Shopify runs for discounts, delivery and payment options, and cart and checkout validation. Checkout is customised through Checkout Extensibility (UI extensions and Functions). The old checkout.liquid approach has been retired. The model is deliberately constrained: you extend Shopify at defined points, and in return you get upgrades without maintenance.

For international selling, Shopify Markets handles currencies, languages, domains and pricing per market from one store. Plus also offers expansion stores when a region or brand needs its own catalog or operations. Each expansion store is a separate store to manage.

SFCC gives developers full-stack control. Logic is written in server-side JavaScript, packaged as cartridges and extended through hooks. Several sites in multiple locales can share catalogs, price books and promotions within one realm. The promotion and campaign engine is among the most capable in commerce. Every SFCC realm also comes with separate development, staging and production instances, plus on-demand sandboxes. Shopify has no direct equivalent of that release pipeline.

Score SFCC higher if you run several brands or countries with real differences in catalog, pricing and promotions from a shared back office. The same applies if your checkout or pricing logic falls outside Shopify’s extension points. Score Shopify Plus higher if most of your differentiation is brand, content and merchandising rather than custom business logic.

3. APIs and Integration

Shopify is API-first and built around GraphQL. The GraphQL Admin API is the main integration API, and REST is now legacy. The Storefront API serves headless front ends, and webhooks handle event-driven flows. Rate limits are based on query cost and are higher on Plus. The app ecosystem covers most common integrations, including ERPs, 3PLs, reviews, loyalty and marketing, with ready-made connectors.

SFCC offers the Salesforce Commerce API (SCAPI) for shopper and admin operations, including custom API endpoints. The older Open Commerce API (OCAPI) is still supported. Both have rate limits and quotas, so integration design matters on SFCC too. SFCC’s strength is depth: hooks and custom endpoints can change almost any behaviour. Brands already using Salesforce Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud or Data Cloud also get the most direct path between those systems.

Weigh this criterion by how unusual your integrations are. If your ERP, OMS or PIM flows are standard, Shopify’s connectors save months. If they involve complex order orchestration or real-time inventory across many locations, SFCC’s depth pays off. For a developer-level comparison, see our article on custom development with Shopify and SFCC APIs.

4. Search and Merchandising

SFCC ships with configurable site search, including searchable attributes, synonyms, sorting rules and boosting, plus Einstein-powered product recommendations. Merchandisers get detailed control over category sorting and search results without developer help. This is one of SFCC’s clearest advantages for large or fast-changing catalogs.

Shopify offers native search with semantic matching and the free Search & Discovery app for filters, synonyms, boosts and recommendations. That’s enough for many catalogs. Brands with large assortments or complex attribute-driven discovery often add a dedicated search layer. A tool like IntentFusion can add advanced AI search to Shopify Plus.

If you add third-party search on either platform, include it in the cost criterion. Otherwise this criterion will overstate one platform’s advantage.

5. Headless and Front-End

Shopify offers Hydrogen, its React-based headless framework, and Oxygen, which hosts it on Shopify’s edge network at no extra platform cost. Developers can also use any front end with the Storefront API. Most Shopify Plus brands still run on Liquid themes, which perform well and are much cheaper to maintain.

SFCC offers Composable Storefront (the PWA Kit), a React storefront hosted on Salesforce’s Managed Runtime. Many brands still run SFRA, the server-rendered reference architecture built from cartridges. Moving from SFRA to headless is a project in its own right, not a setting.

Neither platform needs headless to succeed. Score this criterion on whether you have a concrete reason to go headless, such as a custom experience layer, several front ends or a content platform that must own the pages. If your reason is “it’s modern”, lower the weight. Headless adds a front end your team must build, host and maintain.

6. B2B

Shopify Plus includes native B2B on the same store: company accounts with multiple buyers and locations, catalogs and price lists for each company, payment terms, volume pricing and quantity rules. Many brands sell to consumers and wholesale buyers from a single admin.

SFCC (B2C Commerce) is built for consumer selling. Salesforce’s full B2B capability is a separate product, B2B Commerce, which runs on the core Salesforce platform. Brands doing B2B on B2C Commerce usually build it with customisation. That’s a valid approach, but it’s custom work.

If B2B is a sideline with standard needs, Shopify Plus usually scores higher. If B2B means complex quoting, contract pricing, approval workflows and a sales team working in Salesforce, compare Shopify Plus against Salesforce’s B2B product, not against SFCC.

7. Agentic-Commerce Readiness

AI shopping agents are starting to find, compare and sometimes buy products for shoppers. They read structured product data, call commerce endpoints through emerging protocols such as the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), and need a checkout they can complete. Each platform approaches this differently.

  • Shopify has made AI channels a native feature. Merchants can make products available to AI assistants from the admin, and Shopify co-developed UCP with Google. This gives most brands the fastest route to being visible to agents, with little build effort and less control over how the store is represented.
  • SFCC is building agentic features into Salesforce’s Agentforce Commerce offering. Exposing a storefront through open protocols such as UCP usually means a cartridge or a custom integration on top of SCAPI. That takes more work, and in return brands control exactly which data and actions agents can access.

Both routes work. See how each platform handles AI shopping agents for a side-by-side comparison, or check the specifics for Shopify Plus and Salesforce Commerce Cloud.

The platform matters less here than people expect. Agents choose products based on the data they can read. A store with thin attributes and vague descriptions stays invisible to them on either platform.

Product Data: The Criterion That Moves With You

Whichever platform you choose, your product catalog comes with you. Catalog migration is where replatforming projects most often slip. Attributes have to be mapped to a new data model, variants restructured, and descriptions and images cleaned up. Search quality, filters, feeds and agent visibility all depend on that data.

Treat the migration as a chance to improve the catalog, not only to move it:

  • Audit attribute coverage before mapping. Missing attributes on the old platform will still be missing on the new one.
  • Enrich during migration rather than after launch, when the team is busy with other work. CatalogSpark automates product data enrichment and publishes to both Shopify and SFCC, so it works whichever platform you pick.
  • Score the data work in your cost criterion. It’s often the largest line item that nobody quoted.

Common Mistakes When Choosing

  1. Comparing licence fees instead of five-year total cost. Build, run, apps and data migration usually outweigh the licence difference.
  2. Choosing for the business you might become. Replatforming early for scale you may never reach costs real money now. Choosing a platform you’ll outgrow in two years costs a migration later. Use your three-to-five-year plan, not your ambitions.
  3. Assuming headless is required. Most brands on both platforms don’t need it.
  4. Scoring B2B against the wrong product. Salesforce’s full B2B capability is a different product from SFCC.
  5. Ignoring the operating model. SFCC needs ongoing developer capacity. Shopify Plus needs strong app governance. Neither runs itself.
  6. Letting one trend decide. AI agents, composable architecture and headless all matter, but each is one criterion among several.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shopify Plus enterprise-ready in 2026?

Yes. Shopify Plus runs high-volume global brands, handles peak traffic without capacity planning and includes native B2B. The real question is whether your requirements fit Shopify’s extension model, not whether it can handle your size.

When is SFCC clearly the better choice?

When you run several brands, sites or locales with genuinely different catalogs, pricing and promotions from one back office. The same is true when merchandisers need fine control over search and sorting across a large catalog, or when you rely heavily on other Salesforce clouds.

Can we move from SFCC to Shopify Plus, or the other way?

Yes. Migrations work in both directions. Most of the effort goes into integrations, product data and redirects, not the storefront. A platform migration evaluation will show where that effort sits for your business. Our guide to replatforming without losing your data, your tests or your AI visibility covers the risks to plan for.

Should AI shopping agents decide our platform?

Rarely on their own. Both platforms can be made agent-ready. Your product data affects agent visibility more than your platform does, so treat agent readiness as one weighted criterion.
